The Products Shaping Metal Construction — See Them at METALCON

In our last post, we explored some of the top trends shaping metal construction right now — from thermal performance and resilience to digital tools, cold-formed steel and embodied carbon.

But trends only tell part of the story. The products being developed, manufactured and brought to market are where those trends become real-world solutions. And there’s no better place to see what’s coming next than at METALCON.

While many of these products will be on display among the more than 250 exhibitors at METALCON, the METALCON Top Product Awards, now in its sixth year, places a special spotlight on some of the products introduced since January 1, 2025. The nominees represent innovation across categories ranging from manufacturing equipment and software to coatings, insulation, roofing, walls and more. This year’s list represents a wide and impressive range of ideas, technologies and solutions — all competing for your vote. Voting ends next week, and the winners will be announced on site at METALCON.

From the manufacturing floor to the building envelope, these products offer a look at the challenges companies are solving and the possibilities they’re exploring.

Here’s what stands out among this year’s Top Product nominees — and why you’ll want to see them at METALCON next week.

Automation is Changing How Metal is Made

Automation, speed and production flexibility are front and center in this year’s Manufacturing Equipment category. From automated purlin and structural-profile systems to framing equipment, panel machines and portable roll forming, the products represented in this category reflect an industry looking for ways to increase throughput, improve consistency and labor efficiency.

The bigger story: Automation isn’t just about faster machines. It’s about helping manufacturers increase productivity, flexibility and precision while responding to ongoing labor challenges.

Performance is Getting More Sophisticated

Behind every high-performing building are products designed to protect it, insulate it and help it withstand the elements. Nominees in the Coatings category address corrosion protection and shop-applied primers, while Insulation nominees focus on thermal performance and installation. And Roofs/Rooftop Products bring solutions for fire resistance, leak protection and snow retention.

Different products. Different challenges. But together, they reflect a broader shift toward thinking about how materials and systems work together to improve overall building performance.

The bigger story: Energy efficiency, durability, fire performance, moisture management and resilience are increasingly interconnected. The products shaping the industry are being asked to do more — and do it efficiently.

Design Freedom is Expanding

Metal is a top material choice because of its design versatility and flexibility, and this year’s Walls nominees make that especially clear. Dimensional profiles, board-and-batten systems and decorative metal panels demonstrate how manufacturers are giving architects, designers and builders more ways to use metal as both a performance material and a design element.

Adding another layer to this trend, the nominees in the “Other” category showcase innovations that include custom perforation and other specialized solutions.

The bigger story: Today’s metal products can bring performance and visual impact together — giving designers more flexibility to achieve the look they want without giving up performance.

Digital Tools are Connecting the Dots

digital transformation

The nominees in the Software category show just how far digital tools have moved beyond basic drafting — and offer a glimpse into the future. This year’s products address façade engineering, 3D and 2D configuration, roofing takeoffs, estimating, proposals and other parts of the process that can take significant time and manual effort.

The common thread? Connecting information, automating more of the manual work and making it easier for contractors, fabricators, builders and designers to move from one stage of a project to the next — strengthening collaboration across the metal construction ecosystem.

The bigger story: Digital tools are helping connect design, estimating, production and construction—giving metal professionals new ways to work with more information and less manual effort.

Smarter Products. More Possibilities.

Not every important innovation is a piece of equipment, a wall system or a software platform.

The nominees in the Accessories category range from ventilation equipment to a specialized tool, demonstrating how smaller products can address very practical needs in the field and on the jobsite.

The bigger story: Innovation doesn’t always have to be big to make a difference. Sometimes it’s about solving a specific problem, improving the way a job gets done or making the everyday details a little easier.

The Range of Ideas is the Story

Taken together, this year’s Top Product nominees tell a bigger story than any single category.

They show an industry focused on productivity, performance, design flexibility, digital transformation and practical problem-solving — with innovation happening everywhere from the manufacturing floor to the building envelope and the jobsite.

And that’s exactly why METALCON is worth seeing in person.

These products aren’t just descriptions on a screen. At METALCON, you can see products and technologies up close, talk with the people behind them, ask questions and explore what might have a place in your business or your next project.

Six questions to ask when choosing ERP for a metal business

Choosing ERP for a metal business starts with the work itself: how material arrives, how it moves through production and how an order becomes an invoice. Sometimes Doing It Yourself Costs More Than You Think

In the metal construction industry, there is a certain pride that comes with doing things yourself. It’s the same mindset that has built successful businesses, solved difficult jobsite challenges, and helped contractors grow from small operations into thriving companies. That’s why it’s easy to understand the appeal of rolling your own metal panels. At first glance, it seems simple enough. Buy a machine, source the steel, bring production in-house, and eliminate a supplier from the equation. More control. More flexibility.

Made in America: What It Really Means When You Invest in a Roll Forming Machine

When comparing roll forming machines, the specification sheet usually gets most of the attention: panel profiles, material usage, automation, and price. Those specifications matter. But they don’t tell you everything about the machine you’re buying. One question that deserves more attention is: Where—and how—is the machine built? “Built in America” can mean different things. A machine may be assembled domestically while relying heavily on components manufactured elsewhere. For a capital investment expected to remain productive for decades, understanding what actually
