A Case for Removing Wood Blocking

This session focuses on the use—and more importantly, the removal—of organic construction members (commonly known as “wood blocking”) in steel-structured buildings, particularly those with metal roof deck assemblies, regardless of exterior cladding or roof slope. The presenter will highlight the advantages of using inorganic materials, especially in terms of wind uplift resistance, building code compliance, and overall performance. Additionally, the session will address common challenges associated with wood blocking, including improper installation, lack of trade standards, insufficient quality control, and unclear assignment of responsibility on the jobsite.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the benefits of using metal profiles in lieu of wood blocking.
  • Discover the steps required to remove wood blocking from future projects and how to communicate the associated benefits.
  • Understand how fabricated profiles can reduce material usage and save contractor time.
  • Learn how removing wood blocking can give you greater control over a projects timeline and lifecycle. -Understand to the importance of knowing who is providing and installing

Presenter:

Kent Childers

Consultant, Enspec, LLC

Kent Childers’ roofing career began unexpectedly when he saw a ladder truck at a construction site. Fascinated by the raw sheet copper, he started working as a hand-seamed copper roof installer. He has focused on metal roofing and wall systems, working with various contractors before starting his own company. Now, a roofing consultant, he specializes in metal roofing systems and conducting installation training sessions. He also writes magazine articles about the industry. He is currently working on an article about the outdated use of wood blocking in what is otherwise all-steel construction.
