Insulated Metal Panels: Where Versatility Meets Performance

Today’s “Magnificent Metal Monday” highlights the versatility and vital role Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs) play in today’s metal construction industry. Given their popularity across a wide range of market segments, it is no surprise to see the panels well represented at METALCON on the show floor, in education sessions, and as part of an exclusive off-site plant tour.

You name it, IMPs serve a multitude of market segments from educational structures and public facilities to the retrofit of a rundown mechanic garage into an office space or yoga studio, bringing design vision to reality.

What are IMPs

Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs) are lightweight composite exterior wall and roof panels with metal skins and an insulating foam core. These panels have superior insulating properties, and their outstanding spanning capabilities and one-pass installation makes them quick to install, saving costs compared to other wall assemblies. IMPs are available in a wide variety of colors, widths, profiles and finishes, enabling virtually any aesthetic desired for walls and roofs. (Source: MCA)

Why IMPs

Architects, design professionals, and contractors are turning to IMPs for the following reasons:

  • Energy Performance
  • Design Flexibility
  • Decreasing Carbon Emissions
  • Durability
  • Ease of Installation

From tiny homes to large scale, Building Enclosure highlights the following projects that illustrate the design flexibility of IMPs, how they help to decrease carbon emissions, and how they help energy performance.

Case Study #1 – Design Flexibility

The new AutoNation DRV PNK stadium in Miami, home to MLS soccer team Miami CF, features 40,000 square feet of IMPs in the team’s signature black and pink colors on the 18,000 seat stadium grandstands and the exterior of the training center. The custom colors of the panels created a design aesthetic that continues to communicate the team’s brand image and identity. Learn more with MCA’s Case Study.

Case Study #2 – Decreasing Carbon Emissions

Over 223,830 square feet of IMPs were used to construct the outer walls of one of the largest e-commerce distribution centers in the country, providing high thermal efficiency, reducing energy consumption and cost while keeping the massive distribution center at an optimal temperature without extra stress on the HVAC systems.

Case Study #3 – Energy Performance

QuickHaven, a developer of tiny homes for the homeless, utilizes IMPs for their energy efficiency as well as their durability and ease of installation.
