Basics of Metal Retrofit Roofing

This session will review all the basics of retrofit roofing.  Attendees will gain an overall understanding of how a retrofit roof can be designed and installed. Both metal-over-metal and add-pitch to a flat roof will be discussed. In addition, general marketing and sales of this process will be explained. Finally, a promotional highlight of the MBI Retrofit Roofing Video will be viewed.

Chuck Howard, P.E.

President, Metal Roof Consultants

Chuck Howard is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Engineering in 1973 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He is currently licensed as a professional engineer in sixteen (16) states. He has pursued a career in commercial construction since college graduation, with an emphasis on metal roofing from the start. In the late 1970’s he started a metal roofing company that specialized in retrofit metal roof construction. He followed that career throughout the 1980’s, 1990’s, and early 2000’s, having one of the largest commercial metal roof contracting companies in the US. During that time, he was responsible for approximately 35 million SF of metal roofs, including design. In 2002 he left the contracting arena and entered the professional engineering and consulting arena, where he is operating now as Metal Roof Consultants, Inc. He provides commercial metal roof consulting and engineering for contractors, architects, and building owners. He is accepted as a professional expert in metal roofing in legal proceedings. He is a member of NSPE-NC, ASCE and MBCEA which provide excellent resources to support his consulting business. He can be contacted through his website at www.metalroofconsultants.net.

Dale Nelson is the President of Roof Hugger, LLC. Tampa, FL Roof Hugger, founded in 1991, became a division of the LSI Group, Logansport, IN in 2016.  Roof Hugger is a nationally recognized manufacturer of retro-fit framing systems for existing metal roofed buildings.  The LSI group also manufactures a wide variety of standing seam roof clips, custom metal roof components and other custom components. Dale holds Florida Real Estate Brokers License and a Class-A Florida Contractors License.  He has been in general contracting since 1973; constructing commercial and industrial buildings of all construction types, including wood column & beam, masonry, formed & poured, tilt- wall, and specialized in pre-engineered steel buildings

With over 20-years of experience in the construction and roofing industry.  Allen’s extensive knowledge in both conventional and metal roofing systems provides an unmatched perspective.  As the Fleming 8760 Retrofit Division Manager, he leads Fleming Construction Groups efforts for the persistent service division of FCG and provides management direction for all roofing and retrofit projects based out of FCG HQ in Tulsa, OK.  Fleming 8760 serves clients in the built environment providing comprehensive retrofit services and is a key differentiator for FCG while maintaining relationships with our clients through the life of their facility.  He also helps position balances with employee, customer, and company interests.
