DESIGN DISTRICT EDUCATION

Earn a full year’s worth of AIA LU's (including HSW's) by attending 5 education sessions on Tues., 5 on Wed., and 2 on Thurs.

This session explores the critical role of insulation in modern metal buildings, with a focus on code compliance, testing standards, and performance metrics. Learn how insulation has evolved from basic systems to advanced multilayer solutions, meeting today’s energy efficiency and safety demands. Special attention will be given to the 2012 IECC air leakage requirements and how fiberglass systems comply with testing paths for materials, assemblies, and whole buildings. It also compares IECC and ASHRAE 90.1 standards, highlights key surface burning characteristics, and reviews classification requirements under ASTM E84 and NIA 404. Attendees will revisit the fundamentals of R-values and U-values and learn how insulation supports acoustic performance through STC and NRC ratings. This session equips building professionals with the knowledge to ensure metal buildings meet current regulatory, thermal, and acoustic expectations.

As the world becomes increasingly focused on circularity, companies are discovering just how circular metal materials can be. By understanding how to utilize these materials, all members of the construction and design industry can design and construct for reuse, deconstruction, and recycling. By embracing these practices, professionals across construction and design can meet regulatory and market demands by aligning with stricter environmental standards and low-waste building practices. They can also maximize material efficiency to reduce long-term costs while demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability—an attribute increasingly valued by investors and end-users. Additionally, they can reduce landfill waste and carbon emissions associated with traditional building methods by extending the life cycle of building components and stay competitive by positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable construction. Attendees will gain actionable insights and real-world examples to help implement circular economy strategies in their projects—ensuring their businesses remain resilient and aligned with the future of sustainable building.

Coatings for metal surfaces are typically applied in a controlled facility.  However, coating in a facility limits the opportunity for in-field touch-ups and various repairs. New technology is changing that. Gary will share the innovative opportunities of field-applied coatings in architectural applications. Case studies will demonstrate the benefits of on-site adjustments to match existing aesthetics, facilitate quick touch-ups, and enhance durability. Topics include the difference between air-dried and other systems, cost-effective options, adaptability to various conditions, and maintenance of architectural surfaces.

As wildfires become an ever-growing threat, the construction industry must confront its role in perpetuating destruction. In this session, join the principals of Minarc as they highlight the critical gap between current building practices and the fire resilience needed to withstand these catastrophic events. Tryggvi and Erla will shift the spotlight from defensible space to the materials that make or break a home’s resilience to wildfire. Why are high-rises held to strict fire codes, while single-family homes in fire-prone areas often aren’t? It’s time for a mindset shift. Join these two industry leaders as they address the critical role of fire-resistant materials, the need for stronger building codes, and the design choices that could mean the difference between devastation and durability. Let’s build for a safer community one home at a time.

Architecture is often celebrated more as an art than a science—even by those who practice it. Most definitions of architecture begin with the word “Art.” Yet architecture is a discipline grounded in real-world constraints: clients, budgets, functional programs, physical parameters, and the challenge of responding to or resisting nature. In truth, the art of architecture is built on a foundation of science. Unfortunately, many projects fall short of achieving true architectural artistry because the scientific rigor required is seen as too costly. Budget is too often the excuse for under achievement, becoming the scapegoat for missed potential.  However, every year we see buildings that achieve both artistry and structural performance while maintaining budgets, fulfilling program requirements, harmonizing with nature, and meeting client expectations.

Many of us have a love-hate relationship with technology. It promises increased freedom and productivity, yet often brings frustration when it falls short—and even sparks fear of a dystopian future. These mixed emotions are valid and should guide a thoughtful, measured approach to adopting new technologies. Like it or not, technology is here to stay. But with careful, intentional use, it can offer significant benefits and help us build a more efficient and meaningful future.

Sacred geometry has influenced architecture for centuries, but in modern design, its focus on the beauty of geometric patterns is often overlooked or hidden. This session presents a case study of a unique project that brings the beauty of sacred geometry to the forefront of installation and design. Steve will discuss the process and challenges of roofing a timber framed, straw slurry insulated home owned by two artists. By combining their shared interest and talents in sacred geometry they have created a unique tessellated mosaic roof that is one-of-a-kind. The result speaks for itself, a proof of concept and an artistic statement that stands out in the limited arena of construction product design.
